Small world, Gail! Jay connected with me recently on Twitter, and I have his book on my to-buy list. You are right- amazing things will happen when we connect!

Did you originally meet Jay on Medium?

My friend Chris Palmore recently hosted Jay on Gratitudespace radio. It was really fun to listen to their conversation and to watch the ripples of connection radiate. 💧

No, not on Medium. He reached out to me on Twitter, I imagine because of the brain-injury-writing connection. :)

Quite a list! And a darned good one at that. When I studied psychology, the notion of self determination usually used the term Locus of Control. External locus included parents, teachers, societal pressures. Internal locus as you might imagine involves efforts to learn and express our true selves. To develop characteristics and strivings consistent with same. As a rebel I was generally at war with my parents, corrected my teachers pronunciations and knowledge of world geography, and generally disregarded the good traits any of the above possessed. I thought I was at war with them but over time came to see I was at war with myself. Using locus of control, I lacked helpful guidance to explore my talents and strivings yet feared sticking my neck out to risk being authentic. Chasing my tail as it were! But it’s never too late to seek peace with myself. Start where you are?

Never too late and start where you are… gifts! And in our efforts to change ourselves who knows who we might inspire?

For many years I don’t think I fully understood what Gandhi meant by “Be the change you want to see in the world.” We don’t have a lot of “celebrated” models for such unglamorous work?

Grateful for Jay’s willingness to share how he’s doing it. 😊

Thanks to you introducing me to Jay, I’ve been able to read an earlier draft of his book, receive his Friday newsletters, and follow with enthusiasm the run up to today’s release of Bedtime Stories For The Living. As you suggest, Jay’s book served as a chance to examine my beliefs, my interactions with others, and ask myself some hard questions on what I value in my life. And thanks for the links in today’s BFN in support of Jay and his book, along with Annabelle’s website! The handful of books you’re holding in today’s image offers a good option for some last minute stocking (heart!) stuffers.

I saw your creative review of Bedtime Stories for the Living on Amazon! Loved it.

I plan to give a copy to my local library.

Annabelle is also an author… working on a children’s book.

Thanks Gail. As I’ve learned more about Jay, along with his physical “whack” from the universe, I’ve developed a sense of watching an old Hollywood Hero v. Villain movie. And of course we want the hero to prevail! To save the world, to save innocent children, and of course to save himself. After all, he is the hero. When I read of his recent bout with COVID a few short weeks before the release of his book, it seemed like a scene playing out in an old Greek tragedy! This time the hero prevailed! Do I have any personal heroes? I honestly can’t think of one. Perhaps I should revisit my hero criteria…

Do you?

I/Thou,

Yes… Jay’s 10 day match with Covid after vaccination and booster seems like more than any human should be subjected to. Makes karma seem like folly.

Personal heroes… Many. Some real, some fictional. All are people who changed the world by first leading themselves and then forming connections that changed others in big or small ways. Charlotte from Charlotte’s Web, Pollyanna Whittier, Katherine Johnson, Mother Theresa, Rolf Gates, Ted Lasso… I could go on and on!

We all have potential to be a hero to ourselves although it is not a widespread message… yet. Many of us, including me, learned to look outside for validation which meant I was often not true to my best/unique qualities.

The practices of yoga and writing have been keys to my locks. Painting/drawing might be another. The things that change me most have come from unexpected experiments.
