Reminds me of one of my brighter moves. After planting two black walnut trees many years ago, the first crop was a grand sight! Lots of those green-husked, firm newbies. I set about removing those green covers, and in the process saturated the skin of both hands with the green liquid.
“Don’t try this at home,” is my advice today. It removed layer upon layer of my skin! Washing my hands released more skin than I knew I could spare.
As for ceding personal responsibility, when I stood at the bathroom mirror the next morning there was no doubt. The guy in the mirror! Examining my pink, smooth-as-a-baby’s bottom hands, it was painfully obvious!
Our property is abundant with black walnut trees… nature’s gift! I would not have chosen them for several reasons… not only are they messy, they also emit a substance (jugulin?) that is toxic to a wide array of other vegetation. Night shade vegetables are particularly vulnerable. Even though we have taken care to choose spaces away from their canopies and root systems for garden beds, critters insist on moving and burying the nuts. 🤷♀️
I have learned a lot because of the trees! I hear the lumber makes beautiful furniture.
We’ve had the same UPS driver for twenty years. This time of year he often asks me about roasting the nuts and offers some pointers. Connection.
I have not experienced the exfoliating effects you mention. I suspect because I never peel them… and maybe I have been wearing gloves when I raked and moved them?
I could have easily grumbled about the trees, nuts, or Henny… realities I cannot control. My attitude and learning? That’s where the joy resides.
Ouch! Hope you're OK, Gail. It's nice to see you back in action here, and I look forward to your story on personal accountability.
Nothing broke! Toes and the ball of my foot took all of the disruption. Grateful for ibuprofen. I already feel vast improvement. 😂
Writing this newsletter brings me so much joy. Thank you for reading and commenting because connection is really my biggest motivation. ❤️

Thanks for the memories Gail.
