Henny’s posture stiffened.
She stopped chomping the McDonald’s straw she’d pick up on mid-morning patrol.
(She’d carried its whipped cream filmed plastic cup home yesterday.)
Henrietta sat at attention.
My girl watched without twitching a whisker.
I peered through the misty air, trying to see what she saw.
Unaided eyes had to rely on other senses.
In a rush of subconscious computing, I arrived at my hypothesis…
With the stealth of cat after mouse, we crept a few steps closer.
I’m pretty sure I made out the curve of twitching bunny ears.
Henrietta demands I see things I’d surely miss without her.
The first rabbit of spring!
I hope something just as grand captures your attention today.
P.S. There is not a rabbit in this photo. :)
Dogs’ keen senses are amazing! When I walk my dog - an energetic creature - it amazes me that she sees and runs to check all sorts of small objects. Her response seems to be “this is not a natural part of these surroundings.” A tiny scrap of light-colored paper in the grass. A cigarette butt on the edge of the street. A fallen limb on the bare ground.
Whatever she spots, a run/sniff appraisal follows. Quickly executed, she seems to need to satisfy her curiosity. Or maybe rule out the possibility of something edible...
