Yikes! This stark picture prompted two yankee memories. If the white and black traded places, shoveling coal through an opening into our basement springs to mind. The other memory was that of shoveling snow. Ours and then to help neighbors.

My older brother and I shared the truth that both activities were hard work! Our parents assured us it was the right work. That of helping older neighbors unable to shovel snow. And that of heating our home in the winter.

That made neither the coal nor the snow any lighter (wet snow was the worst!) but we learned a little about working for the common good

Warm home = warm hearts. 😊
