COSTCO has times that the “Hey, taste this!” sampling stations seem omnipresent. Feeding frenzies often result! I give them a wide berth...
Your pointing out the Reciprocity Rule helped me realize how it’s operative in many aspects of my life. A scheduler with a friendly voice, eager to book me for this or that appointment, is far more likely to gain my assent than the drill sergeant! Or the Girl Scouts outside the grocery store’s doors. Young souls, trying their level best. Irresistible. The stranger riding a bicycle who rings my doorbell, offering magazine subscriptions at an unbelievable price! Not so much.
I did roll the dice once with a bicycle peddler. On a broiling August day a very fair-skinned woman, with a beet red face, rang the doorbell. She began her sales pitch and I immediately knew she wasn’t from this continent! I would soon learn she was from Lithuania.
I suggested I’d be happy for her to cool off and perhaps enjoy a cool beverage. Informing her I was married but that my wife was at work was my attempt to signal that my intentions were nothing more than a cool down & rest for her. Our conversation was casual and she was proud to speak of her country’s economic success, very high literacy rate, and tuition free universities! I asked what I might pay if I moved there for studies? “Nothing”was her answer!
When her facial coloring began to resemble the color of her arms, I offered an insulated bike water bottle from my collection for her use. It was gladly accepted. I purchased (getting back to reciprocity and the circumstances for same) an inexpensive set of educational material that I later shared with friends for their children. I gained an understanding of a nation, and her people, that I previously knew little about. And got a great return on investment! 😁 A day I’ll always remember for its connectication. And reciprocity.
ha! Every year we get young people trying to sign us up for a pest eradication plan. They drive around our neighborhood with its long driveways on motorized boards. One girl even offered to let me try hers once. Thalia was quite tempted, but Nia's would not allow. 😂
Thank you for sharing your stories with us Gary. Kind of you to be aware of the bicycle rider's distress. I'm happy to hear of the resulting magical math.
Sometimes the “human” in me, a reasonable part of my stuffing, just innately acts out of kindness! As our society has grown more diverse and complex, becoming guarded and more restrained feels unavoidable. Living out loud seems preferable. 🤷🏽
I forgot to mention that the woman’s original bike with multi-gear shifting had been stolen. Not having infinite funds she had settled for a single-speed beach cruiser. Tallahassee is quite hilly as Florida goes. I considered her un-dauntable.

If we’re here, why not make the most of it? 😂
Seals and Crofts: “We may never pass this way again.” A long ago favorite.

You sure are a magnet for soft/strong women!
