Have you read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? I have been reading my way through very slowly and observing my experiences… and what I see outside of myself through the lenses of classic/romantic thinking and the idea of Quality the author has introduced to me. It has been useful.
Quite obviously we are not all meant to be skilled in all areas… impossible. But there are two quotes that shed some light on my understanding:
“We will understand the nature of our particular genius when we stop trying to conform to our own or other people’s models, learn to be ourselves, and allow our natural channel to open.” Shanti Gawain
Thoreau, “I believe that there is a subtle magnetism in nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright.”
Follow the energy?
We are very busy doing and not making enough space for being?
If there is no measuring stick for "being" does having any measuring stick for any "becoming" interfere or stand in the way with the connection that you describe as yielding to?
In my limited experience… yes. Measurement stands in the way. That’s why I measure my progress as a writer through connection via comments rather than stats. I also often practice yoga with my eyes closed so that I am not measuring myself against other students.
As usual I am confused. How is "measuring" progress through connection not measuring? And if you are altering you method of connection by closing your eyes is the effort, also, in a sense giving power to the concept of measuring ( comparison)? Can the attempt to not measure be a measure?
Sorry... all of this is in the realm of thought and one's conditioning. It is certainly a form of connection. For me, though, there is connection outside the boundaries of thought and time. That is where "being" is for me(not me).
Perhaps, Rumi's field. Can we meet, really meet there?
I am sorry to have taken off in this direction today. That said once started there seems to be no turning back. Being for me is not becoming. It is not a thing to be my best at or even better at. It is for me life as meditation. It just is. It is possible, of course, to work or strive at becoming almost anything. The confusion or issue for me is it seems all of the acts of striving simply take us away from being open to the connection in the field ( if you will) of what is? ( One)
Inspirational!
You remind me of Brene Brown's original Ted Talk on Vulnerability. What is the measuring stick for "being"?
I’m not sure there is one? What do you think?

Doing my best. What else is there?
