Raisins, nuts, kernels, seeds
Marching down main
Where to settle your attention?
Do you try to take it all in?
An impossibility?
A mind can only handle so much.
Do you watch the Statue of Liberty on stilts,
the high school band,
the Lion’s club?
Veterans of Foreign Wars?
Fat bellies painted with eyes and lips,
muscles contracting and releasing in time to the tuba?
Me?
My salvation right now is knowing about fragments.
Why does he think that?
Why did she say that?
What might shift perspective?
A few days ago I saw a few minutes of New York’s governor Cuomo on television.
He’d brought his daughter along to the press conference, where he addressed spring breakers congregating on beaches.
He explained why he thought this was irresponsible—a raisin talking to seeds?
Michaela added a peer fragment to his argument—she’d cancelled her spring break travel plans and will miss her college graduation.
Her father asked, “What have I taught you since early childhood?”
Her reply…….“Risk versus Reward.”
As I watch the parade, I consider fragments and wonder how best they might fit together.
Everybody’s got an opinion…
How fluid is yours?
Very thoughtful on a Monday morning, ‘tho not surprisingly so.
“Sometimes you feel like a nut
Sometimes you don’t.”
I, on this Monday, not quite so thoughtful. More like “Drop your quarter and let the Wurlitzer begin.”
Perhaps the amalgam of all things COVID-19 has a thick veil over my eyes. More reactive. Less thoughtful.
