Have I mentioned that I hate the dentist?
Not the actual doctor…
but rather what happens when reclined in a dental chair
with a bright light shining
into my far from perfect mouth?
A few weeks ago I had a routine cleaning with x-rays which revealed dark matter under a crown, and on an adjacent tooth.
This awareness elevated tooth numbers 29 & 30 from watch — to action status.
“The first available appointment is June fourth.”
And even though I was not experiencing even a twinge of physical discomfort from the decay, I learned a lesson (or twenty) from my dance with cancer.
If there is a problem that has no potential to rectify itself without intervention —
DEAL WITH IT!
“I’ll take it,” I replied with the enthusiasm of someone choosing to have a large needle inserted into her jaw.
On the morning of the appointment a friend said, “One of the beautiful things about being an adult is you can cancel appointments if you want.”
An hour later, two skilled caregivers worked in my mouth while I kept my eyes closed under a pair of sunglasses. My inner resistance showed up in the form of unrelated body parts clenching while I tried to remember to breathe with intention.
The Novocain wore off.
I managed several days of painful recovery with practiced grace and resilience.
I’m getting better all the time.
All of us knows, not what is expedient, not what is going to make us popular, not what the policy is, or the company policy — but in truth each of us knows what is the right thing to do. And that’s how I am guided.

Great post Gail! I’ll confess “needles in the mouth” is a mind numbing thought for me. And I’m overdue for my next visit.
How splendid that you included the segment from this week’s PodBlog, OneLine, OneLove. You and Jay are great co-hosts for the show! I can’t recommend your BFN followers enough to tune in next Thursday at 11:11 am, CT. I welcome the encouragement and tips for sub-fledgling writers like myself.
