Does it seem possible that you could be a social media influencer? Even in a de facto sense? Encouraging your readers to look within, being authentic, being willing to be vulnerable in finding and using one’s own voice.

Glad to experience your influence!

Then there are the other influencers. Millions of followers without the messiness of dialog. Implicitly or explicitly, these influencers seem to express their superiority. Wardrobe, bling, dangerous stunts.

The millions willing to behave like lemmings demonstrate the “looking outside” you spoke of. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band a while back sang, “I feel like a number, I’m not a number…”

So it seems that there’s a tug of war between being an individual - looking within - and having a sense of belonging and group identity at the expense of conformity. But that isn’t a case of either/or, right? Your recent Lucille Ball quote concerning love started with the individual (love oneself) and expanded to loving larger and larger groups.

Perhaps, in lacking self love, becoming a follower feels safer? Follow your path this day and every day.

I can understand where people struggle with what seems like a choice between individual authenticity and fitting in. I’ve been walking that narrow ridge for a while, haven’t I?

What l’d love for BFN readers to take away from today’s letter is… when you find, embrace, and love your authentic self… those who matter won’t mind (in fact they’ll love you for giving them permission to do the same) and those who mind don’t matter.
