Where I Come From...

“What you’ve done becomes the judge of what you’re going to do—especially in other people’s minds. When you’re traveling, you are what you are right then and there.”
People don’t have your past to hold against you….
~excerpt from blue highways by William Least Heat Moon
Some time between a slice of sausage & mushroom, and a dish of cookies & cream the kid said, “I don’t know. That part of the state…it’s just….different.”
He’s said this before, talking about Northeastern Wisconsin…
where I come from.
“Why’s it different?” I asked.
“I don’t know—the people I guess.”
“Am I different?”
“No—you must have changed from moving away. Have you guys seen the Manitowoc Minute?”
“The what?”
“The Maitowoc Minute—on YouTube?”
“Play it—I want to see.”
Tears
rolling
down
my
cheeks!
That’s
where
I
come
from!
I
LOVE
where
I
come
from!
Seven or eight Manitowoc Minutes later we started our Scrabble game.
I lost.
And I watched more Manitowoc Minutes after the game.
Laughter is good for the soul!
My son’s right.
I’ve changed.
I’m changing every day, hour….minute.
A wise teacher once told me that as I changed I’d start to see the people around me changing, too.
I’m proving her right.
Do you think that’s what Gandhi meant when he said…..
Be the change you want to see?
Can you be a constant traveler?
Will you allow others to travel, too?
