After a rabbit hopped across the road, up and over a stubborn and slow to melt snowbank to safety, Thalia started humming, “We built this city on rock and roll, we built, built, built this city.”
“Where is that Starship song coming from…it’s from 1985?” asked Calliope. “She was still in high school!”
“I’m not sure,” said Thalia. “Perhaps it’s the light springy weather? Or, the rabbit that Henny watched and didn’t try to chase? I just felt…happy and the song appeared.”
“Remember the video a friend once shared? A girl riding her bike, singing We Built this City on a summer day…what was in the bike’s basket? A cat?” asked Calliope.
“The video was advertising something…can’t recall what,” Urania jumped in.
“So a quick peek at Wikipedia tells me the catchy ditty won some kind of “worst” award,” said Thalia.
“Everybody’s got an opinion?” asked Calliope.
“And there is speculation about the song’s meaning—80’s rock band in disagreement with music executives,” Thalia continued.
“La, la, la, la, la…,” Urania interrupted. “I don’t want to know! To me the song is light and happy…reminds me that we build our lives one decision at a time.”
“And…how we choose to see the world guides those decisions?” asked Calliope.
“Exactly,” said Urania.
“Want to take the fourleg for a walk at the lakefront today?” asked Calliope. “…supposed to hit 58 degrees this afternoon.”
“Yes!” the reply was unanimous.
Deb loves that song! If the song comes on before we roll out of bed (we have two morning alarms: clock radio with 70s/80s music, waking us up to go into snuggle mode, then ten minutes later the annoying buzz on my watch, telling us to get up... or hit Snooze) she’ll ask me to snooze the roll-out alarm so she can hear the end of it. So to me, the song is about snuggling with my wife. 🥰
