If there was a line up of potential pup-park playmates, I never would have selected German Shepherd Schotzy as a match for Henny.
My preconceived notions and judgements would have cut possibility off at the snout.
Every time the two meet, Henrietta runs and teases.
Schotzy chases and herds.
Tongues hang.
Shotzy limps.
Unlikely pair…complements each other’s strengths.
Joy in connection.
I followed a few newsletter links this week and landed on a clip from Ted Lasso.
Can’t shake how vividly the scene demonstrates Whitman’s wisdom:
Also, I shared it to Facebook with this: A writer friend of mine (who's not on Facebook) finds profound truths in daily life, often revolving around her dog, Henrietta. In this post, she quotes Walt Whitman: "Be curious, not judgemental." There's a link to a clip from Ted Lasso (a sports comedy TV series I knew nothing about) that illustrates this beautifully, and had me in tears. Granted, it doesn't take much for that to happen - any good "underdog wins with grace and good humor" story will get me every time. But I can't help thinking that if we approached political opinions and positions with curiosity rather than judgment, we'd build bridges, not walls. Sometimes dogs and little kids and sappy TV shows teach us truths we've forgotten.
Gail, I watched that clip, and I'm sitting here in my PJs crying. (Admittedly, it doesn't take much, lol.) I don't know the Ted Lasso story (or movie?), but when the underdog wins with grace and good humor, it gets me every time. I feel like the message to be curious rather than judgemental is a rallying cry for our times. Imagine if we could apply that to our political divisiveness...
