pruning you garden —
wardrobe mind and heart — making
space for more blossoms
~Kara Masters
Dear Kara,
I asked and received.
Two books into a trilogy, I found myself without an editor for the third. I sent a request out to the Universe… Please help! I need an editor. Now!
And I was fussy about it, too… I didn’t just want someone to find my grammar errors… I wanted a curious confidante, a creative collaborator, somebody who would not be afraid to tell me how to make the work better. A friend heard my request, and said… “I know someone. Want me to reach out and see if she’s interested?”
Like coupling train cars, I felt a click of connection on our first face-to-face call. What abundant joy it is to share words, ideas, photos, and life with you. I love our play in closing our letters to each other… things like:
imagining Henny by your side
taking it one moment at a time and delving into favorite books as an escape
snuggling under purple fleece
please send me something to bring a smile
keeping my antenna up for more smiles to send you soon
Can you believe our email chain is eighty-seven messages strong?
Thank you for editing Flourishing Fictions and adding your beautiful voice in harmony with mine.
You make me want to be a better person.
Gratitude and Love,
Gail

Sweet! Pruning, editing, painting, and, yes, typing, all make up a wonderful whole.
Your remarks about needing and seeking a new editor for Flourishing Fictions brought to mind Deepak Chopra sharing a similar story. He had decided to write about Rumi and wanted his book to contain illustrations. He described his search as being more than just finding an illustrator. Rather, he felt certain that whoever became the illustrator needed a “passion for Rumi.”
And as you succeeded by your connection with Kara, so did Chopra. This tapestry of connection, collaboration, and joyful efforts grows more beautiful with each new telling.
