The gigantic catastrophes that threaten us today are not elemental happenings of a physical or biological order, but psychic events. To a quite terrifying degree we are threatened by wars and revolutions which are nothing other than psychic epidemics. At any moment several million human beings may be smitten with a new madness, and then we shall have another world war or devastating revolution. Instead of being at the mercy of wild beasts, earthquakes, landslides, and inundations, modern man is battered by the elemental forces of his own psyche. ~Carl Jung
While I waited, I overheard conversation behind me.
Righteously angry, the Midwestern pair agreed that it was ‘right’ for the film Mulan to star an actress from Asia.
Apparently it is also ‘right’ to boycott the film because the Asian actress did or said something ‘wrong’ about police brutality in Hong Kong.
I wondered about their sources.
I myself know nothing about the film or actress.
Seek first to understand, then to be understood. ~Stephen Covey
Still digesting your newsletter today. My gut sense is that of a “harmonic convergence“ of all the parts of what you presented. Conclusions? That human experience is subjective and influenced by a myriad of elements. Carl Jung’s observation from nearly a century ago has me bobbing my head. For another, perhaps scratching their’s with furrowed brow! What belief across the vast majority of humans might unite us to transcend our external challenges?
Saber-tooth Tigers are not our friends? Perhaps human evolution, our collective unconscience, greatly lags the arrival of new challenges. May the laying of wreaths today be heartfelt and a contribution to deeper understanding.
