I was throwing a treat across the back seat as enticement for Henny to hop in when a car pulled up alongside, window down. The driver seemed a little anxious.
“I’m looking for a park…not the one back there…,” she pointed in the direction she’d come from. “I’m late to meet friends. There’s a park you need to walk to?”
“If you park here, you can take the asphalt path to the mulched trail…follow the green arrows…eventually you’ll come out of the woods and see a parking lot. You’ll have to cross and climb the hill to see the play structures.”
My directions did not seem to be helping.
A car seat bound toddler fiddled with a toy.
“Do you have a park sticker?” I asked.
“No.”
“Well, for five dollars you can drive into the county park and get a lot closer to the playground.”
“How do I get there?”
In the same moment I considered giving more directions I was filled with understanding. I myself struggle with verbal driving directions in unfamiliar places.
“Instead of directions, do you want to follow me?”
She accepted with much gratitude.
I was lifted like a milkweed seed for the giving.
I drove the extra mile to help her find her friends.
