When I was 14, I crossed the English Channel from Calais to Dover. It was on that crossing that I first experienced sea sickness. Instead of standing on the deck, I hid inside the ferry’s theater. Dustin Hoffman was on screen dressing as a woman, running from his reputation, and juggling a range of male and female emotions, experiences, and trials.
This week in The Creative Workshop, my new friend Yijun listed Tootsie as a film her work rhymes with. Bumping into the title, all sorts of memories and feelings rose to my surface—a vague recollection of the film, the adventure of traveling to Europe, the funny idea of a cross-dresser in the early eighties.
After a full day of writing and connection, I chose to give my mind an entertainment break.
