A captain’s spy glass
Pointing our attention matters
Captains do like cats
~Robert Boyle
Dear Bob,
You challenge me…
During our weekly prompt calls, you actively listen to what each member on the call shares, and then ask probing questions. I watch as our call participants pause, and furrow their brows. Do you catch me furrowing?
You entice us along further than we’d otherwise go. I suspect your questions serve to clarify your understanding… along with a delicious side dish. Each of us is given an opportunity for a deeper drink from the community cup.
What if? hangs in the air like a paper snowflake suspended from a ceiling tile with a paperclip. What if you look at this from above, instead of below? What happens if you put on glasses? Or, gaze through a kaleidoscope? What if we open the window to invite breezes inside?
Together we spend a lot of time clarifying what words and phrases mean to us, with an awareness that our experiences color our definitions.
I’m most grateful for the nudges you have offered me specifically, encouraging me to climb over some of the “personality walls” that have been holding me in place. I’m learning that we grow when we find a toehold at the time we’re ready for it. You’ve offered more than one rock for my reaching arms and feet.
You are generous, caring, and thoughtful. I will always remember the wedding gift you arranged for a member of our group, the books you purchase and distribute to support us, and the gentle teasing you accept with grace. Without hesitation, you agreed to read and write for Flourishing Fictions. Thank you.
You make me want to be a better person.
Gratitude and Love,
Gail
