Humble Influence
I doubt he knew…
When he walked across the rich green lawn, opened the latch, lifted the lid, and exposed the naked bluebird hatchlings for us to see
He was shaping future me…
The wooden nesting box was accessorized with a clear plastic cup
Instilling interest…
Into which he dropped a small handful of mealworms retrieved from the garage refrigerator
Where little before existed…
Mother and father feathered blue came to eat and feed their brood
Hooked by his keen interest and enthusiasm…
Flitting to and fro from branch to box, selecting worms, entering and exiting through portal to their young
When he talked of warbler, thrush, and thrasher, his energy was impossible to resist…
We built a box, bought mealworms, and waited for a pair to set up house across the lawn from our cedar deck
Inspired by Greg’s feathered fervor…
I observe those who peck, peep, and preen in our yard and far beyond
A dimension added to my reality…
So when we meet, we can share notes and stories, observations and joy
He influenced my life,
I hope he knows….
In memory of Greg Jorgensen, an avid birder, who introduced me to the nesting habits of bluebirds.
What are you spreading with your enthusiasm?
