“Who said that thing about making more friends by being interested?” The Muse of Many Questions directed her question to Thalia, who pulled out her legal pad of wise and witty penciled annotations.
“Dale Carnegie said… You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years trying to get other people interested in you. Is that the one?”
“Yes… that’s it. Do you remember when Typist first recognized we were riding shotgun? She signed up for the write 100 words per day challenge? In addition to feeding us butter pecan and mint chip, she let us out to practice in public.”
Urania sighed. “We’ve grown because lots of generous readers have encouraged us through comments and conversation… it is our responsibility to pass that on… to share our scoops with the muses of others.”
“Who was Albert Schweitzer?” Thalia asked.
Urania checked Wikipedia. “He’s kinda hard to put in a tidy box. Says here he was a theologian, organist, musicologist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician… a polymath.”
“Well I’ve a quote from him here that reads… There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed,” Tal replied.
“Ice cream for everyone!”
feeding muse(s)
“Expect the unexpected!” Not a famous quote, but rather my surprise at hearing the Muses’ ice cream favorites. This reader has basic antipathy for both! Butter pecan always seemed a bit gritty and the pecans musty. Nuts gone bad! Then mint+chocolate+perfectly good, stand-alone vanilla ice cream? I’m shocked that anyone ever thought mixing them all together made taste sense. Like ketchup on a just broiled filet of halibut. Fresh from the ocean.
Therein lies the miracle of life: strangers in the ice cream shop, choosing wildly divergent flavors, can still discover shared humanity. Just the same I would choose to not regard a three-scoop waffle cone of mint chip ice cream as human service!
All with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
Thank you so much for the kind words and the podcast plug! Have an amazing day!
