hours after sunset
truck pulled into garage
returned travelers
entered through laundry room door
plunked down a few bags
greeted student who was making an attempt to appreciate music
and waited…
kerplunk!
four paws hit floor
descended stairs
scrabbled across tile
leapt
landed in lap
Henny accepted a millisecond’s worth of touch
then greeted the other returned pack member
with equal enthusiasm
sleep, and then…
well before sunrise
six legs traveled neighborhood
underneath twinkling stars
washing machine hums
percolator perks
there is so much to be grateful for…
While basking in Sunday morning autumn glory, boots crunched the fallen as a multitude of joiners twirled and swirled in descent. I received a text with the photo of Henrietta shared above:
She got stuck in the bushes and started a hole under the deck.
hahahaha!
That’s my girl…and my boy.
I had the slightest sense of unease leaving the pair together for a couple of days.
Could they survive? Coexist even?
I put all that nonsense to bed the minute we pulled down the drive on Friday morning. I hardly gave Thing 1 and Thing 2 a thought…except for that trail where there was a black lab in front and another behind.
I didn’t call or text with Did you feed? Did you walk? Has she chewed your arm off?
If they couldn’t manage without me by now, well…it was high time they figured it out.

And a good time was had by all!
‘Though perhaps for different reasons.
