Hmmm...the cost of free services! And hopefully that is the full extent of that hook. In lots of other instances, the "game" is to garner information about you as a prospective customer. That gets sold to monster digital data businesses that sell bundles of lots of folks information to advertisers, etc. Google used to own their practice of doing just that, by saying that it would help their pop up ads be more tailored to your "needs." For some reason, the "tailored" result never felt like a good fit!

Well...of course they got my email address.🤷‍♀️

Ran into my friend Mike and his poodle Cosmo over at the marsh this morning. We really enjoy some I/Thou conversation because he thinks beyond the obvious. Today we talked about this very topic and the “targeted” advertising we receive.

People are aware, but have not yet reached a pain point strong enough to inspire action?

I heard there is a new film on Netflix...The Social Dilemma. I plan to watch. Have you seen it?

Add to the fun the data breaches that occur from the Pentagon on down. Some egregious human error, some exploitable code in agencies' operating networks and security systems. Imagine if ransomware took over your computer or phone and the ransom demand was through the roof! (I know your writing consists of a good deal of material priceless to you...) Hospitals, city governments, utility providers. Maersk, a giant Dutch shipping business (that operates in about every major port around the world - all digital, of course) was attacked by a virus that nearly killed them. One employee was in Africa (I think) with his laptop but didn't have access to the Internet. Frantic calls were made, all over the world, merely hoping to find at least one such employee. Instructed to not use his laptop and return to Europe asap, he did. The code to allow resurrection of Maersk was used from his laptop to do a complete reset of their operations!! As their shipping orders piled up on docks all over the world, the very operation of the ports ground to a near standstill. For all shippers!! The practice of backing up systems, from personal computers to mega corporations, takes on a whole new meaning in the face of such an occurrence. I've not seen The Social Dilemma. The downside, or tradeoffs, of social media? Love the topic!

I have a movie scene in my head...Jack Nicholson yelling at Tom Cruise, “You can’t handle the truth!”

That might be true for many of us?

I did not know the story of Maersk.

Perfect movie scene! Some recent discussions have spoken to being vulnerable, willing to be "imperfect" and honest. So imagine being a multi-billion dollar business (Maersk) whose fate hinged on a sliver of hopeful thinking that maybe one computer somewhere had not already been infected!? If I remember the detail, the virus became active because someone clicked on a phishing email (which contained the downstroke for the virus). Is much of life that fragile?

Thanks for a real thought provoker—your last question.

Perhaps it is...and the large majority of us are adept at pretending it is not.🤷‍♀️
