Mixed messages
“Did you hear that?”
I nudged my husband.
“No, what?”
The pudgy toddler one register over mouthed a fluorescent green Dum-Dum. One meaty fist gripped a bouquet of wrapped suckers. His free hand reached for a chocolate bar. The sparse candy selection did not include lollipops.
I overheard his mother say, “No. Candy is bad for your teeth.”
And I wondered how the disconnect I observed was lost on the child’s mother.
I also wondered how often what I say and do are out of step.
