I remember couches covered in plastic - when we would visit old people without kids. With our brood of 5, there was no way. Purchases made for wear and tear (we were raised just about always with a canine and feline in the house as well) there was no room for plastic.

I loved the point of where we put plastic on ourselves, staying safe. Gets me thinking ...

Gauntlet down!! Your story brought back memories of my maternal grandparents and predates plastic covers. The formal living room was off limits to children! “Just sit on the straight backed dining chairs against the wall. And don’t talk!” That furniture held up well...

They were also still using their Maytag washing machine powered by a gasoline engine. Frugal. Cautious. Overprotective. Extremely dour. I might have caught a bit of that as well.

Seems I’ll need to keep taking “story therapy” until the rain passes.

I do remember couches covered in plastic. Yes, it did protest the material but my god was it awful.
