What did people feed dogs before kibble became a thing?
Most people prefer a problem they cannot solve to a solution they do not like.
~Lee Thayer
I looked it up.
Raw meat and scraps.
Prior to the industrial revolution, dogs lived outside and worked for a living.
These days many work for their dogs—including me.
Day four of pre-sun run=✔……not complaining….I feel better since we started and Henri’s nighttime barking has stopped. Was my “not enough exercise” hypothesis right?
For as long as I can remember, when my husband heads out the door for work he’s scratched a furry ear and said to our current dog, “I’m off to make dog food money.”
Of course we wouldn’t have a dog if we couldn’t afford to take care of one.
Henrietta is a luxury item?
Of course she is!
Yesterday at End of the Leash, a local boutique pet store, I spent over half an hour talking to a lovely woman who has worked in the store for 14 years. I learned so much about kibble, grain vs. no grain, raw diets, enzymes, hot vs. cold meats (no kidding!), the diet/itching/allergy relationship, and dental benefits associated with chewing raw bones.
Humans created kibble and now discover it’s health drawbacks are incongruent with its convenience.
See any parallels to the human diet?
Leaving the store with a 12lb/$33 bag of kibble made from rabbits, I couldn’t miss the irony. Henrietta would love nothing more than to catch and devour the abundant rabbit population hopping around our yard.
I consider this designer food an extravagance.
My old thinking is pointing it’s finger and laughing at me.
Yet….if Henrietta stops itching, and doesn’t require dental cleanings…we’ll come out ahead in the end.
Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably why so few engage in it.”
~Henry Ford
Hasenpfeffer? Will the itching stop?
We’ll see.
When is the last time you stepped out of a thinking rut—chose learning over knowing?
We our food budget increased by $500 a month when our 2 beloved German Shepherds died. No more ears to scratch but we do have more travel money!
Great topic! Our dogs really can be our “best friend“ so it’s logical that we would want them healthy. Our breeder put so much faith in “TLC” dog food that he offered a 2-year money back guarantee for owners that used that food exclusively. With 25 lines - not ingredients - on the bag, wow! But who wouldn’t want New Zealand lamb, blueberries, and green-lipped mussels in their dog’s food. Yes, kibbles, but quite a variation on the theme. And delivered to our door! Our pooch has the least offensive breath of any dog I’ve owned (I don’t check the exit)!
